Alistair and Simon Green: Q & A

Alistair and Simon Green: Q & A

Chris Heal30 Oct 2014 - 11:00

I am sure since the Green's started playing for Port, their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Now its time to find out a bit more about the pair.

They seem to be inseparable when it comes to rugby. Both sitting in exactly the same place on the bus on an away trip- Alistair (the older brother) in front of Simon and between them; many appearances for Stockport.

Yet away from Headlands Road and Stockport, its fair to say not many of us know a lot about the talented Green brothers. Its clear just from my two months as the reporter of Stockport Rugby Club that both Alistair and Simon are well respected and well liked around the club.

I spoke to the siblings and threw a few questions their way; some easy, some serious and some which could cause some squabbles in the Green household.

Who was the more talented youngster? And who is the better player now?

AG: I would say we were very similar as youngsters and I think Si is the better player now. I've always said Si is the more gritty player but I have more flare.

SG: I think we were both pretty equal, and even now i don't think there's much difference between us. I think we offer different things to the team, although Al has forgotten how to tackle low or just doesn't fancy it.

Which one of you is the better trainer?

SG: I think probably me regards to training, although we both attend the majority of trainings. Al does seem to waste as much time as he can doing stuff before going out to join the rest of us to train.

AG: Training in rugby terms again we are similar, always reliable although we hate it when the same names every week go full smash in training. Gym work wise, Si is shocking. Barley ever goes. Has sit down meals every other night and is still fit and massive.

Is there a rivalry between you two or have you always got along?

AG: Always get along, still have cuddles daily!

SG: Never been a big rivalry between us. Biggest rivalry is probably when we play FIFA breaking the odd controller. As me being the youngest, I think he should always let me win, overall we get a long really well.

Who was the better in school?

SG: Probably me. I would always worry about being on time and getting stuff done. Al could of been better in school. He is very clever but was very laid-back and still is. He was never in any big trouble. He just couldn't be bothered to do any work and thought he could sweet talk his way through school.

AG: Si wins on school. Much better behaved and punctual with lessons and homework. Although I don't think I was never not the teachers favourite!

Who gets the most banter from team-mates?

AG: I do. Constantly getting reminded that I am the worse Green. Don't mind what so ever because I'm better at footy. Saying that, Si is the best goalkeeper I have ever seen and I promise I'm not just saying that. He is destined for the World Cup 2018.

SG: Al receives most banter, especially about being put in the second row. He believes he should be playing scrum half.

Who is the better drinker?

SG: Al is probably the better drinker. I often get lost or fall asleep if I've had too many, but Al seems to handle it better but he's had more practice.

AG: That one goes to me. Si just hiccups and laughs at nothing when he's had a drink.

Would you think you would be mates if you weren't brothers?

AG: Probably would be mates! I hope we would be! Can't see any reason why we wouldn't, he's the nicest guy in the world. Maybe he just puts up with me though because we are brothers.

SG: Yeah we would be, we've both got the same sense of humour and enjoy the same films and TV shows, we've got a lot in common.

What are each other's worst faults?

SG: Worst fault in Al has to be his outrageous dress sense. I think he's slowly getting better, but still pulls out the most horrible clothes such as his bright pink Nikey basketball shoes which he would wear with a smart pair of pants. Also his attempt to bring back David Beckham's curtain hairstyle.

AG: Si's worst fault has to be how whipped he is by his girlfriend Jess! She certainly wears the pants in that relationship. Mine is probably the complete opposite, I'm constantly in trouble with my girlfriend for putting the lads first along with Rugby, Football, occasional Xbox and the gym. I'm pretty much perfect in that department.

Do you have the same hobbies?

AG: Both play Power League on a Monday night, Rugby Tuesday, Thursday and if I'm not using my cinema card he has usually nicked it. However, I'm such a nerd with terrible fashion sense. Si is much cooler than me.

SG: Yeah both enjoy same hobbies, love playing football try and play as much as we can, both enjoy the gym and going to the cinema.

Who would win a fight?

SG: I think Al would probably win in a fight. He always had the better of me when we were little, although I am 5 years younger! I often wiggled my way out of the crippler cross face.

AG: I think a fight between me and Simon would be very pathetic. We are both too soft. I think I might just win by using everything I've learnt from watching the Matrix so many times, but if I punch him in the head that's a broken hand straight away. He has the hardest head ever and that's probably from all the Chokslams, Rock Bottoms and Stone Cold Stunners he used to get at every advert brake when we were little.

Favourite rugby moment both playing and watching the game?

AG: Playing - Winning the Junior Colts North A league and becoming the most successful colts team ever at Stockpot RUFC. Best bunch of boys you could ever have. Watching - Jonny Wilkinson nailing that right footed drop goal to win the World Cup.

SG: Best moment for me would have to be with Junior Colts beating Macclesfield to win the Cheshire Cup and then the next time we beat them in the semi final to go onto win the final. And promotion last year was good. Best watching moment would probably be Jonny Wilkinson's drop goal to win the World Cup.

What's it like representing Stockport together?

SG: Its really good. Both have enjoyed playing at Stockport for years and its nice to get the chance to play with each other. Its great to see our Grandpa come watch us. He's proud of us and has enjoyed watching us play over the many years.

AG: It is good to play together because we are always on the same wave length. Sometimes when you see each other in a position they might get hurt you rush over to help even though you perhaps don't need to.

What is your overall assessment of Stockport's season so far?

AG: Season thus far has been a tough one, especially after the success last year. We knew it would be hard. Some games we are just way under weight as a team and as hard as we put it in, its a difficult intensity to keep up. Injuries and a couple of key moments in games have made us miss points which is a shame. The Christmas break can't come soon enough to get some key players back, and hopefully if we all fix up, we will grab some points along the way!

SG: The season so far has been tough. We've often played great rugby but our success is yet to be seen. We've all put in a lot of hard work and the good results are bound to start happening. We need a good run into Christmas.

So there we have it. A brief insight to the life of the Green brothers. Alistair is unfortunately missing for this Saturday's clash away at Stourbridge due to fracturing his ulna two weeks ago. Kick off at Bridgenorth Road is 3pm.
