Port overcome Wirral in nailbiting final that demonstratred true club depth

Port First XV overcame a strong Wirral side to lift the Cheshire Cup for the first time in the 102 year history of the club.

The journey started in August when the team travelled to Northwich with Head Coach Tom Eaton naming a young side blooding many youngsters but it was the performances of senior players Arran Perry and Morgan Mohring that saw Port home which won Stockport a home semi final versus a full strength Anselmians.

A man of the match performance by by centre Tom Hughes saw Port home in a pulsating game where Annies started like a house on fire before Port sealed the win with two late tries overcoming their league rivals 43-34.

On to the final at Chester where Tom Eaton named a patched up side with Senior Colts Archie Iddon & Ben Lavender starting against a strong Wirral side fresh from their Papa John Cup win the previous week against an in form Manchester side.

The game commenced with Wirral very much to the fore and it was against the run of play that Port fly half Kenzie Leach opened the scoring with a penalty. It was to be Wirral though who scored the first try of the day after a patient build up of some 20 plus phases was repelled time and again by a stoic Port defence before Wirral eventually forced their way over for a deserved 7 pointer. Kenzie Leach then reduced the arrears to 1 point with another well struck penalty.
With the half drawing to a close it was to be Wirral who struck again with the last play of the half with an almost carbon copy of the opening try after another patient build up again was again met by a beligerent rearguard action by the Stockport boys before a gap was found to see Wirral leading 14-6 at half time.

After spending most of the first half defending it was now Ports turn to take the game to their opposite numbers. After a period of pressure a quick tap penalty was taken by scrum half Archie Iddon who fed prop Mat Lawrowich whose powerful surge was stopped just short of the line before Tom Metcalfe finished the job from short range with Kenzie adding the extras 14-13.

Five minutes later Port finally regained the lead after the Port scrum was finally rewarded for its dominance after the pack pushed their Wirral counterparts back towards their own line before No 8 Owen McPherson picked up and powered his way over for a richly deserved try with Kenzie Leach again addiing the precious conversion.

With the score now 20-14 the game opened up and it was Wirrals turn to search for a score but every attempt foundered on the excellent Port defence with Metcalfe & McPherson in particular dropping anything in a Wirral shirt that moved. Port had the chance to make the game safe with a late penalty which agonsingly hit the upright. After what seemed an age the referee blew and Port were champions.

What a game and it was clearly the depth of the squad that helped see off Wirral and it was great to see old hands Taylor & Lawrowich add some much needed firepower in the second half to a tiring pack who worked hard all day.
Also special mention to our Colts who played such a great part on the day, Ben Lavender looked calm and collected all day and Archie Iddon's brilliant kicking game made sure Wirral had to start every attack from a long way out.
Man of the match was a close run affair but Tom Metcalfes tackling, particularly in the first half where Port were under so much pressure takes the MOM. Winning the final was a great reward for what has been a brilliant season for Stockport and seeing skipper Calum Hibbs lift the trophy was a fitting way to sign off an excellent season for the lads.

Next up is the second team final at Macclesfied v Sale 3rd May KO 3.00 PM
