Reflections on this weekends rugby by our President Martin (aka Tommy) Taylor.

Well, where shall I start.
Lets get Lymm out the way. We lost. First time under my Presidency of just over a year. Well done Lymm. Like all great rugby clubs/players, we shall take it on the chin, and move on !!
That said, what a fantastic performance by all who’ve played in the first team over the last 12-15 months. All players & coaches should be very proud of what they’ve achieved & that historic period of being unbeaten.
A massive welcome to our friends from down the road – Macclesfield RUFC, especially their Honorary President, the one and only Pete Harper. Well that’s not totally true, as his dad Pete Harper (Senior) I believe filled the same position a few years back. To many years back to be honest.
Pete and I go back a few years, approx. 55 years actually, to the good old days of Bramhall High School. It was actually Bramhall Grammar, when we first went there. But with pupils like Pete (2 years younger ) & me, we soon got it downgraded to a High School !!
Under the influence of our sadly departed great PE teacher, Dave Wroe, we both were introduced to the rugby world. Here we both are, many, many, years later in the positions we hold at our respective clubs. Had Pete not been on the school bus from Poynton, but lived in Bramhall, no doubt he might have become a PORT man, rather than a MACC man. But hey – he’s done a brilliant job over the years at Macc, captaining teams & numerous roles assisting the club, which we all know is very time consuming, and now leading from the top as Honorary President.
At least we got little bro – Tim Harper at SRUFC.
“Macc”, as a club, have a great record through all ages, both the mens & ladies section. It is a very vibrant & impressive set up down at Priory Park. A credit to all the Macc rugby people !!
So far this season, they’ve not had a good start, but rest assured they will be up for the challenge here today at Headlands Road. I envisage Macc will come out with all guns blazing, a very tough, competitive game. Performed in true rugby spirit & may the best team win.
Our M&J section had a superb Festival, Sunday last week, with literally hundreds of kids, about 900, and thousands of parents & supporters. Huge thanks to all involved especially Gemma Bertenshaw & her army of helpers/volunteers. Well done. Massive applause !!
Today we have 50+ booked in for pre match lunch. That’s great. If anybody wants a table for other matches, contact Andy the steward or myself. It helps generate extra income for the Club & creates a great vibe on matchdays !!
We expect a large crowd for this local derby – writing this in advance, fingers crossed the weather is kind to us, as currently showing sunny with showers. Lets hope more sun and less showers !!
The Club right through all the ages & sexes are all doing well and hoping for another bumper season.
Remember, this season is very, very important, firstly to build on last season’s success & promotion, with a great squad of players & gifted, committed Coaches, but also up & coming 2023 sees SRUFC 100 birthday. We are planning a few celebration “Do’s” – more info to follow over the next few months. Lots of memorabilia such as 100 anniversary ties, shirts, blazers etc all in the process of design & will be ready to buy in time for Christmas !! to be worn with pride during 2023 and beyond.
