Macc wasted no time and were quickly into their stride with an early penalty kick after Port were holding on. 0-3.
The away side once again were piling the pressure on and after line-out ball their no. 3 sauntered in unopposed. 0-8. Worrying signs for Port as the home side hadn't settled at all so far.
Only 10 minutes had gone but it already felt all one way traffic as Macc once again sliced through Port’s defence to score under the posts. 0-15. Desperate times as Port needed to respond and quickly to gain any sort of foothold in the match.
Port began to pressurise the Macc defence with phase after phase, without real penetration. Macc kept Port at bay amazingly and a chance for the home side to respond had gone. Virtually in the next move Macc ran from their own 22 to score. Port were deflated in what had been a massive swing in the game and their final aspirations were now hanging by a thread. 0-20
Port couldn’t get out of their own half and were forcing passes giving Macc more opportunities to add to their tally, and they did moments later after some loose tackling gave another score for the buoyant away team. 0-27.
This one had really got away from Port but the second half was an opportunity to go down fighting and a much improved performance was delivered.
Alex Gibson and Jo Rushton entered the fray. Both had notable impacts. Port were pushing and starting to show what they have been doing all season long. Good quality line-out ball and a try for Tom Gardner. 5-27. A glimmer of hope had been restored.
Disappointingly this was quickly extinguished when their ‘man of the match’ no. 13 ran through many tackles to score another try. 5-34
The home side were beginning to move the ball quicker and upped the intensity. Macc for the first time in the game had something to think about.
‘Operation Driving Maul Juggernaut’ was causing havoc for it’s final hurrah this season as Kieran Hibbs added the finishing touch. 10-34. Port hadn’t gone down without a fight and showed their spirit and never-give-up attitude.
Approaching the hour mark and Macc were now completely coasting. A few questionable forward passes and tired defending gave the visitors two more tries. 10-48.
Port weren’t done though and salvaged some pride with the final try of the match. A lovely cross field kick from Owen and smooth finish from Sam Fisher. Final Score 15-48.
A rather chastening experience for Port but Macc had been too strong on the day and we wish them good luck for the final. Roll on next season!
