Match Report by Theo Bowyer...
An eagerly anticipated first match in Regional 1 North West did not disappoint. From the opening minutes Port assumed total control and this was shown when Si Green went over on 4 minutes after early pressure forced a penalty and a 5 m line out. 5-0 (conv. missed).
Port soon added to their tally on the 10 minute mark when a slaloming run by man of the match Sam Graham, resulted in an easy score under the posts. 12-0 (conv. Ben Dearing).
Burnage really couldn't get to grips with Stockport’s speed and intensity all game and after a further infringement by the men in black, Port were rewarded by twinkle toes Si Green, with a wonderful offload, coupled with good work from Kieran Hibbs to put Calum Owen in at the corner. Solid kicking from Ben Dearing nudged the score to 19-0.
On 24 minutes Tom Eaton showed his class with a 50/22 kick and a forward drive from prop Paul McGookin put Port firmly in command. The forwards picked up where they left off last season with their dominance at the scrum and line out. 26-0 (conv. Ben Dearing).
Port continued to look assured and their constant pressure on the Burnage defence forced a yellow card after a deliberate knock on.
On 32 minutes a first glimpse of what to expect from South African born new recruit, Rory Atwill, following a penetrating run which ended in a second try for Sam Graham. 33-0 (conv. Ben Dearing).
Once again Rory Atwill showed a fine turn of foot to create space for Si Green to grab his second try and put 40 past the disheartened opposition with time still before the half time whistle. 40-0 (conv. Ben Dearing). A classic and familiar Port maul added more misery for Burnage as Kieran Hibbs goes over. 47-0 (conv. Ben Dearing)
The first half really exemplified how clinical Port were and how they will have to take that mentality and attitude throughout the rest of the season when they face sterner tests.
The second half, understandably, after the very high standard established by Port, fell a little flat, as the game was littered with niggly fouls and free kicks. This didn’t stop Si Green’s hat trick after waltzing through the weak Burnage tackling, once again, to extend the score to 54-0. (conv. Ben Dearing).
Port became a little sloppy and lax for periods in the second half and were punished when a few ricochets and a fortuitous bounce of the ball, resulted in a consolation try for Burnage. 54-7 (converted).
On 59 minutes Paul McGookin scored his second try and highlighted the hard work by the reliable forward line. 61-7 (conv. Ben Dearing).
Further changes were made by coach Keith and a debut try for Alex Gibson - a new signing from Loughborough Uni after a direct run from Ewan Holt. The final action of a cracking match. 66-7 (conv. missed).
Overall a thoroughly dominant display from the boys in green, red and white. Roll on Kendal next Saturday!
