STOCKPORT DRAW A BLANK ON WEST COUNTRY TRIP

STOCKPORT DRAW A BLANK ON WEST COUNTRY TRIP

Richard Hope5 Mar 2012 - 15:31

This was a tight game, with both sides attacking and defending well, home side Luctonians came out on top 17-8 after scoring three tries to one by Stockport

Stockport seemed to have scored two more tries, one in each half but the referee found reason not to allow them. Luctonians third try in the final minutes deprived Stockport of a bonus point.

With the wind blowing straight down the pitch in Stockport’s favour in the first half Stockport made a good start and seemed to have scored a try through flanker Nic Smith after 5 minutes, but the referee awarded a scrum in Stockport’s favour but there was a turnover as Stockport were driving for the line. Josh Longmore converted a penalty from the home 10 metre for a 3-0 lead and Stockport kept play in the Luctonians half until a penalty was awarded on 30 minutes, it was quickly taken and centre Jamie Anthony beat the defence to score, the conversion was just wide (8-0 to Stockport). Good running by the Stockport backs and aggressive defence kept Luctonians pinned in their own half as the wind prevented them from clearing with the boot. The half finished with a turnover as Stockport were driving for the line from a lineout .
Despite having the wind in their favour Luctonians were under pressure early in the second half, a good attack was halted as a Luctonian player clearly knocked the ball on in midfield but the officials missed it and Luctonians took play into the Stockport 22. The defence was good but Luctonians were awarded a penalty, which was tapped and moved to the wing on the short side for a try on 60 minutes. The ball came out of the side of a Stockport scrum in the 22, Luctonians got the loose ball and moved the ball to the right and the Stockport defence was outflanked for a converted try to put Luctonians 12-8 ahead. Stockport attacked well and again looked to have scored with a drive over the line but the referee did not award the score. A late penalty to Stockport 15 m out from the Luctonians line was reversed as the touch judged called an offence by Stockport. This allowed Luctonians to get into the Stockport half, what looked like a good turnover by Stockport was penalised and Luctonians kicked into the Stockport 22. There was a major fracas as all players waded in, Luctonians were awarded a penalty and they got the touch down from a lineout drive in the final minutes deprive Stockport of a bonus point.
