Stockport travelled to 2nd placed Birkenhead Park with a side considerably weakened by injuries and unavailability, the players coming in represented one of the youngest sides Stockport has fielded in recent years. Despite a great first half effort, with the score still only 8-3 to the home side with only 5 minutes of the half to go, the greater power of the home scrum proved too much and two late first half tries and another another two second half tries gave Park a 36-3 victory. Three points was a poor return for the effort put in by Stockport and a number of scoring chances were created but the young side were unable to convert them.

Birkenhead were on the score sheet with a penalty after only 5 minutes and an unconverted try 2 minutes later as they ran from a line out on half way through some missed tackles and their centre scored. Some good defence and a near miss as Dudley Southern was just beaten to the touch down after he kicked ahead kept Stockport in the game and Southern converted a penalty from 40 metres to make it 8-3 with 5 minutes of the half to go. A penalty following an offside at the kick off gave Park a line out and their drive took them over the line for a converted try for 15-3. With the kick off straight into touch Park took advantage and after some real pressure and good phases Stockport eventually ran out of defenders and another try for the home side made it 22-3 at the break.

Stockport started the second half well and a good run by hooker Paul McGookin looked to have given Tom Eaton a run to the line but Park just managed to get in a tackle. Birkenhead started to totally dominate the scrum and despite a yellow card for their flanker they kept the pressure on and as the game went into the final quarter got a third try to go 29-3 ahead. Some good play had Stockport into the Park 22 but a turnover allowed a clearance. The dominant Park scrum created a number of penalties as Stockport struggled to hold the drive and in the final minute a penalty on half way was tapped and the Stockport defence was unable to respond and the Park wing ran 30 metres for the final try, which was converted for 36-3.

Next week is a home local derby against Burnage who are 5 places above Stockport in the table, kick off is 3 pm.
