Stockport travelled to Kendal with both the first and second fifteens on the coach. Playing on the excellent facilities at Kendal the first team continued their successful run by scoring 6 tries to 3 to end Kendal's unbeaten record at home this season, while the second team, fielding several of the Colts were narrowly beaten by 36-31 on the artificial grass pitch Kendal boasts at their new ground.
While Stockport 1st XV were always in control of their game they struggled to cope with the well drilled maul of the home side and the quality restarts that Kendal delivered. However overall Stockport were just too strong for Kendal, and dominated most open play and executed a number of good planned moves to score some of their tries. Despite the 9 tries it was the penalty count that was probably top scorer, as both sides had two yellow cards and the home side were awarded a penalty try. Territory and possession were probably just about even but Stockport were better able to convert their chances and their defence was generally sound. So with a final score of 21-40 Stockport continue their quest for an unbeaten season with three games to go.
There was an early score for Stockport as a quick line out ball was moved into midfield, quickly recycled and moved left for Dudley Southern to squeeze past the defence and run in to score near the posts, Ewan Holt converted to make it 0-7 within five minutes. A well planned line out move had flanker Ed Poulson coming round from the front and collecting the ball to go in for a try, Holt made it 0-14 on 20 minutes. Too many penalties allowed Kendal to spend time in the Stockport half before a good passing movement by the Stockport backs was stopped by a high tackle by the home Number 7, who was yellow carded. As the half came to an end a 5 metre scrum by Stockport had scrum half Rory Austin going wide and his inside pass put No 8 Simon Green in under the posts, with Holt adding the 2 points it was 0-21. Simon Green was mysteriously penalised as he jumped to take the restart and with the half in overtime, Kendal won their line out and their well drilled maul took them over for a try, Poulson was yellow carded as Stockport tried to stop the drive, and it was 7-21 at half time.
An early second half penalty gave Stockport a line out in the Kendal 22 and as the ball was kept alive substitute scrum half Alistair Green went blind and through the defence to score just 4 minutes from the restart, Holt converted and Stockport had their bonus point and a 7-28 lead. Again a high tackle stopped a good Stockport move by the backs and the home scrum half went off to the sin bin. Stockport opted for a scrum at a penalty and Simon Green picked up and via his brother Alistair full back Callum Owen had an easy run in, with this the only conversion to escape Holt it was 7-33. Kendal were by no means going to concede and they had a good period of pressure before a driving maul took them in under the posts to make it 14-33 at the end of the third quarter. A penalty was awarded to Stockport in the Kendal 22 and Southern was alert to the chance and tapped and ran in almost untouched by the Kendal defence, Holt completed the Stockport scoring at 14-40. Some real sustained pressure by the Kendal forwards resulted in a penalty try and a yellow card for Austin, 21-40. As Kendal finished strongly, seeking a bonus point but Simon Green turned over a Kendal line out on the Stockport 5 metre line and Alistair kicked the ball dead to end the game.
Next week the team travel to Douglas Isle of Man.
