Stockport visited local rivals Wilmslow and put on a good show of open running, attacking rugby, despite the heavy ground. Scoring 4 tries in each half, along with 4 Ewan Holt conversions to finish just short of a half century, winning 12-48. However this side sets itself such high standards they will be disappointed to have conceded two tries to Wilmslow, as the home side had Stockport under pressure for short periods of the game. Despite the good linking play by Wilmslow Stockport were always in control , there were two tries from Skipper Rory Austin on his birthday and two from wing Jack Martin. Holt was named man of the match, having made some impressive runs, scoring an early try to add to his conversions and setting up Martin's first try. Once again this was a whole team performance and it was great to see the backs keeping the wings busy as they moved the ball wide on many occasions.
It took only two minutes for Stockport to get on the score board, after a powerful scrum on halfway Tom Eaton's run set up a ruck and the ball was moved right for Holt to glide through the defence and score, he duly converted his own try for 0-7. Just 5 minutes later there was a try for prop Tom Gardner after the ball was moved right then left across the field and Holt's well timed pass found Gardner on the wing to get the touch down 0-12. Stockport kept up the early pressure with a 5 metre scrum and drive and Austin spotted a gap and ran in from 5 metres, Holt added the conversion and it was 0-19 after 13 minutes. Wilmslow then got into the game and had a good spell , Eaton was yellow carded for a high tackle and the home side took advantage of the extra man and their No 6 ran a good line to take a short pass and run in from 20 metres, 7-19. Some good long passes gave wing Dudley Southern a run and the recycled ball went to Ed Poulson and he broke the tacklers' efforts to score for 7-26 at half time.
Stockport made a quick start to the second half and Holt's well placed kick into space gave Martin an easy touch down for his first. Wilmslow responded with some good phases and as Stockport fell off a few tackles they scored an unconverted try to make it 12-31 with half an hour to go. A break by Holt and a good carry by Simon Green followed by good passing gave Austin the space to run in for his second, with no conversion it was 12-36. Wilmslow never really got back in the game Austin made a telling break and ran into the home 22 and hooker Dom Sheratte was on hand to finish with a try, which Holt converted for 12-43. After a couple of penalties Wilmslow briefly threatened but were turned over and Stockport attacked again, Martin got the ball wide on the right and with little space to move he kicked ahead and beat the the defender to touch down and Stockport finished on 12-48.
The second team, featuring 7 of the Colts completed a very impressive 92-12 victory over Wilmslow second team, indicating a positive future.
Next week is a home fixture against Birkenhead Park, who have not lost since the turn of the year so a tough game is expected, kick off is at 3pm.
