In more wet and windy conditions Stockport secured another win but this was no easy game, home side Altrincham Kersal provided stern defence to deny Stockport any score in the first half and it was not until the 57th minute that Stockport got their first score, a try by skipper Rory Austin, converted by Ewan Holt. it was another 15 minutes before another score, an excellent finish to a good movement by wing Dudley Southern to make the final score 0-12 to Stockport. With the wind against them in the first half Stockport just about dominated possession as both teams looked to kick for territory, with AK failing to take any real advantage of the wind in their favour in the first half.
The first half was a cagey affair with a lot of kicking and neither side gaining any advantage on the score board and much of the action taking place in the middle third of the field. A good run by Simon Green, followed up by prop Tom Gardner making more ground put pressure on the AK line and Stockport opted for a scrum when the penalty was awarded but they failed to control the scrum and the home side were able to clear. Unusually there was no score so they turned round at 0-0 for the second half.
At the start of the second half Stockport won a penalty for holding on and Green tapped and ran into the AK 22 and passed to Austin who was stopped just short. Play in this period was mostly in the Altrincham Kersal half and Stockport created an overlap but were unable to take advantage with a pass going astray. As the third quarter came to an end a great drive from a line out in the AK 22 allowed scrum half Austin to break and go over the line, Holt converted to give the visitors the lead at last. A penalty in the last 10 minutes gave Stockport another chance to drive from a line out and after good control the ball was moved left and Southern squeezed in at the corner in the difficult conditions Holt was unable to add the extra 2 to make the final score 0-12.
Next week is expected to be another tough game at home against Firwood Waterloo.
