The League season got off to a great start as Stockport completed a convincing 44-10 victory over visitors Penrith at Headlands Road. Scoring 7 tries Stockport dominated most of the game, maintaining concentration and pressure for the full 80 minutes and playing a mix of powerful forward work and good running by the backs. But the score line perhaps did not reflect that Penrith were a good side, playing some very good running rugby and using an effective off loading game that looked at times as if it could have Stockport in trouble. Apart from some missed tackles, which allowed the Penrith full back to run through and score the Stockport defence was strong, denying Penrith any other scoring opportunities, apart from their early penalty. With the second team completing a 34-24 win against Firwood Waterloo this was an excellent start for the senior squad, demonstrating strength in depth and positive competition for places.
