Despite the rain, wind and mud, Stockport produced a very efficient and ultimately ruthless performance to beat Broughton Park by 62-0 in this rearranged fixture. Once again it was a whole team performance based on total domination by the forwards. Every member of the pack handled and carried well but back rowers Ed Poulson and Simon Green were prominent for the many metres they made. The backs too passed really well despite the difficult conditions. With the score at 62-0, the referee called a halt 10 minutes early as he was struggling with a ham string injury and both teams were glad to get out of the rain and mud. This result means that since the New Year Stockport have played 4 games scored 152 points and conceded only 3 points, and this game confirmed they are definitely an all weather team!
The first scrum gave an indication of the dominance Stockport were to achieve up front and a 30 metre drive from a line out set up a try for scrum half Alistair Green under the posts. Ewan Holt converted. The other Green, Simon, scored after a powerful scrum created the chance for the second try, Holt was on target again. Broughton Park provided some resistance before full back Callum Owen followed his own kick, charged down the clearance and scored the third for Holt to make it 21-0. Yet another well controlled drive from a line out gave Callum Hibbs a try to make it 26-0 at the break.
Just 2 minutes into the second half a powerful run by Poulson was stopped just short but the ball was recycled and wing Jack Martin got his first try. Another Poulson run and quick recycling had the ball moved along the backs and substitute wing Dudley Southern ran in through a gap in the Park defence for 38-0 as Holt added the difficult conversion from the touchline. Ali Green got his second under the posts after very good handling and continuity for 45-0. Stockport were now ruthless in retaining possession and making the most of the carrying by all the forwards. Skipper Rory Austin beat the tacklers to make it 50-0 before Prop Tom Gardner completed a powerful carry to score near the posts and Holt made it 57-0. The final try before the referee called a halt was scored by Martin, picking up his second after Park failed to control a bouncing ball from a kick ahead to make it 62-0.
Next week Stockport are away to Altrincham Kersall with a 2.15 kick off.
