Stockport travelled to Ashton for the final game of the season with both teams playing for 3rd place and a solid end to the season before the start of the cup run. With the Stockport 2nd team struggling for players and with Mel McCaughey deciding his son's birthday was more important, it saw a start at fly half for senior colt Rhys Warhurst, partnering dad Keith in the half backs as well as a first 3rd XV start for fellow colt Joe Rushton packing down in the scrum with dad Graham.
Having left Stockport bathed in sunshine, the game kicked off in a torrential downpour with last minute changes being made seeing Kev McCarthy start on the wing replacing the delayed Aaron 'Ken' Hussain. Stockport were soon into their stride though and some excellent phase play saw the ball moved wide and into the hands of full back Will Trollope who sauntered over for the first try of the afternoon, converted by Warhurst. Ashton came roaring straight back and through the power of their forwards managed to barge over underneath the posts for a converted try to level the score which also saw Trollope depart with a head injury, being replaced by Hussain. Again Stockport went back onto the offensive and further excellent hands given the conditions saw wing Oye Oyewumi crash over for another try converted by Warhurst. Ashton again came straight back and 7-14 quickly became 14-14 as errors led to another home side score. With the weather still unrelenting, Warhurst pushed Stockport further ahead with a penalty and this was followed up by a bullocking charge for the line by 2nd row stalwart Colin Nevett which was again converted by Warhurst taking the game into the half time break with the score at 14-24 to Stockport.
The 2nd half did not start well as Ashton were soon on the score sheet with their 3rd and fortunately final try taking the game to a very tense 21-24 score line however the game soon changed as the Ashton fly half made a pre-emptive decision to try and decapitate No.8 Chris Dodd which resulted in a very soft yellow card from the ref for what was a definite straight arm shot directly to the head (Freddie Steward would have been mortified). From the resulting melee and with Ashton now down to 14 men, centre Jason Holmwood burst through 2 would-be tacklers to race the length of the field and score another Warhurst converted try. Ashton now knew they needed to score next but directly from the kick off, they tried something different and changed sides which saw the ball land directly in the hands of fellow centre Duncan Header who set off on a mazy run that led him all the way to the try line without anyone laying a finger on him, again converted by Warhurst. With the game now all but over at 21-38, Warhurst kicked off his boots and reclined into his comfy chair with his slippers as he kicked Ashton to death with some exceptional open play kicking from hand. After one of a number of raking touch finders, an Ashton player commented that he was too good for that level and should have been playing a higher standard. Dad Keith interjected and said he just wants to play with his dad. Who's his dad came the reply? Its me said Keith at which point the Ashton player replied no way you're his dad cos you're shit!!!!!!!
With the game all but over, another crossfield kick from Warhurst gratefully found the hands of wing Elliott Smith who went over for another Warhurst converted try and then another score (I think from Ken Hussain) which was also converted by Warhurst leaving the score at 21-52 as we kicked into the final few minutes which left just enough time for Smith to register his 2nd try and Warhurst to finally blot his copy book as he actually missed the conversion leaving the final score at 21-57 to Stockport.
Too many great performances to mention however special praise has to go to Rick Morgan, Dom Waterhouse and Dan Eccles who all made the trip to Caldy so that the 2nd XV could put put a team which meant the 3rd XV game could go ahead. Lots of great performances during the game with prop Jack Booth, lock Graham Rushton and recent addition Owen Houghton (all forwards you'll note) all getting mentions from skipper (and fellow forward) Cockersmith but MOTM with 7 conversions, 1 penalty and after kicking Ashton off the field was fly half Rhys Warhurst
