A break from league action saw Stockport 4's as the only home team as they faced off against Helsby 1's in the quarter final of the cup. It was a mark of how far the home side had progressed as they were now pitched into action against a 1st team currently top of the where the home side previously played.
Another week of recruitment by supreme leader McNicholl saw Jordan Kieran's starting at stand off (result) however this counter-acted by a bizarre occurrence which saw inside centre Steve Moore having to throw into the line out leaving the evergreen John McPherson to fill the 12 berth in his absence. The be fair, the line-outs went ok but not something I would suggest going forward as a new ploy.
The first half of the first half was played entirely in the Stockport half and after wave upon wave of attack, the defence was eventually breached with the home side converting their score to take a 7-0 lead. Stockport went straight onto the offensive and after a trademark bullocking run from No.8 Andy English, the ball was quickly whipped away from the breakdown into the hands of Kierans who managed to put Moore in for a score, converted by Kierans to tie up the game. Helsby were then back on the attack and through a combination of indiscipline followed by poor defence, the away side's No.7 danced his way over for another converted score leaving the halftime score 14-7 in favour of Helsby.
The second half started well for Stockport when sustained pressure led to a penalty goal from Kierans to make it 14-10. With Stockport in the ascendency and completely against the run of play, Helsby forced a turnover which lead to an unconverted try giving them a 19-10 lead and from there it just went downhill at a rates of knots!!! 3 more quick scores later and the game was over as a contest which saw Helsby deservedly into the semi final and left Stockport thinking what could've been.
Great performances all round especially considering this was a 4th team v a 1st team but player of the match must go to Jordan Kierans who orchestrated things well and kept the home side moving forward.
