With the prospect of Manchester looming the following week, Stockport cancelled their planned training session and accepted a request from the unknown quantity of Rhyl RFC to travel to Headlands Roads and take on the U10's. With the weather holding off and the pitches looking well despite the incessant rain, our visitors arrived with their team of 12 and a group of committed parents to play what turned out to be the most interesting and developmental game we have probably ever played.
With the difference in rules that the 2 teams play to, it was decided that the first half of the games would be played under RFU laws and the second half would be played under WRU rules. It was decided that the mighty Whites would tackle Rhyl first whilst the Reds and Greens entertained each other with a game on the adjacent pitch. Following the Whites, the Greens took on the visitors and finally the Reds made their bow.
All 3 games were fiercely but fairly contested and it was clear from all the comments from players, coaches and parents that everyone had enjoyed it and also took positives from the games. So much was the enjoyment of the Stockport players for the Welsh rules that in the final Stockport game of Greens v Whites, both sets of kids requested that we play under WRU rules!!!
In terms of learning and development, it was an excellent morning and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in attendance despite the North Pole wind howling across the pitch.
