The visitors to a wet and overcast fortress Headlands today were Widnes, a change from the previously scheduled match against Sandbach.
Spitfires started the match in the manner they wanted to play, dictating play, chasing the ball hard, not giving Widnes an inch and putting them under pressure from the first whistle. This was an impressive performance from Spitfires who carried the ball very well showing some excellent handling skills and working hard at the breakdown. The problem (albeit a good one) that Spitfires coaches have is the depth of players they have to choose from and a strong bench was eagerly waiting their turn on the sidelines.
Spitfires have come a long way this season, and today was a fine display of the ability and skill they have as a group of talented young players. Widnes were not going to hand the game away however and they showed much attacking ability in phases of the game. For their part Spitfires defended well putting in some big tackles and with speed at the breakdown. This was a real team effort. The forwards worked hard winning two of the oppositions scrums and demonstrating a real improvement in the ruck and likewise the backs ran the ball well albeit a few handling errors and really tested the Widnes defence, the team working well in their pods.
This was a classy performance from Spitfires and every one of the lads played really well. Whilst it would be wrong to single out individuals it would also be wrong not to mention the contribution of a few players. Euan Coveney Winter was like an aggressive pit bull, snapping in defence, Oscar Parker put in some ferocious tackles, Tom Condron, Joe Kitch, Will Morrey and Danny Bonner carried the ball superbly with strong engines and pumped legs and Teddy Charnock demonstrated just how far he has come in the game. But special mention to our Beatle, George Harrison. For one so new to the game and the club he was standout and had a really great game.
These lads work hard in training and the coaches put them through some tough drills. Today that transferred that to the pitch and their performance was testament to the hard work they put in week in, week out.
A match report does not allow to mention an entire squad, they all deserve it however this was a really strong team effort. Well played lads, all of them.
