Some days, things happen that you just want to forget, put in the past, and move on. Today was one of those days, albeit learning from the experience.
This young side have not had it all their own way of recent with not much success in the final result department. Compared to most sides they face they are admittedly on the ‘smaller size’ in general and there is growth development yet to come, as well as on field development. But when David took down the mighty Goliath, the gods didn’t look down and opine ‘Well that shouldn’t have happened!’. Size is not everything, but it does count …. said someone, once, somewhere (allegedly!)
MV Trafford laid down the gauntlet from the kick off with an early try and everything that followed seemed a struggle, with the things we usually do well seemingly laboured and more difficult. A second try from Trafford followed before Spitfires seemed to settle into the game and start to play. George Roberts went over for a nicely worked try (in the corner of course!). But Trafford wanted more from the fixture and with the bit between their teeth went over for a third, answered once again by George Roberts - in the corner again! (swiftly heading towards his ‘Hat-Trick Jug’)
And therein the good times ended. The lads did not give up however with a sterling work rate, alas they just did not ‘click’ as a team as we know how well they can. Those aspects of the game that have on occasions in the past been clinical were missing and appeared laboured.
In the end, Trafford were the easy winners, but the lads came off the field drained and despite the result put in a good shift. A few injuries to add to issues, Toby with a badly twisted ankle and Oscar with (hopefully not!) suspected torn hamstring, we wish them both well and a speedy recovery.
Onwards and upwards to next week – away to Tyldesley. *Note to parents and carers – Early night on Saturday next please!!
