Spitfires went into this game with an injury/unavailability list more like the Book of Genesis and so early nerves were twitching amongst the group albeit not openly evident. Playing away from home at Wilmslow on the first team pitch, the stage was set and an air of quiet confidence babbled amongst the home and travelling supporters. Despite a malfunctioning hot beverage machine and a few sore heads amongst the parent group, the sun shone down and a cool breeze blew to awaken the belief.
Despite the final score, the game was fairly close, however Spitfires work at the breakdown, tackling and ball handling in open play was the difference between the two sides. Ewan Coveney-Winter patrolled the midfield like an unleashed pit bull making some fine aggressive smother tackles to regain possession and ultimately going over for a well-deserved try after a determined carry. Oscar Parker covered well at full back and made some outrageous runs from deep, and with the forwards on hand to retain the ball at the breakdown it was fed out to a backline swiftly by James Hull where Harry Wightman, ‘TK’ Tinotenda Nheta and Captain Toby Howard constantly threatened in the midfield. The second row Tom’s (Powel and Condron) again worked hard and carried some good ball into contact with Joe Asher continuing the good work along with Joel Grantham, Joe Kitch and George Nelson. This was a very positive team effort with much improved tackling and work over the ball on show. Tries from Tom Condron and a brace from TK sealed the game nicely for Spitfires
Next stop is the May 5th Cheshire Bowl Final, and if they can repeat this performance and play to the undoubted ability they have, not many will stop them. There again, Winnington Park or Sale FC may have something to say about that!
Well played Spitfires – Onward to the Cheshire Bowl Final. Silverware awaits!
