Stockport Spitfires U16s produced a superb, hard-fought 35–10 victory away at Fleetwood, playing around three quarters of the match with only 14 players against a physically bigger home side. It was a display of resilience, skill and relentless, fair physicality: every Spitfire put in tackles that mattered.

We began at pace: Oscar struck in the fifth minute, then converted his own try. At 13 minutes, Oscar crossed again after excellent work and an assist from TK, before again adding the conversion for a 14–0 lead.

The opening quarter was defined by disruption and injury. Euan was explosive and aggressive from number eight before an unfortunate knee injury forced him from the field after only ten minutes. George H had already left temporarily for a blood break, allowing Steffan to come on and immediately make some excellent tackles of his own; George then returned to fill the gap left by Euan. Soon afterwards, scrum-half James Hull, who had organised and communicated well in the early exchanges, also had to leave with a head knock. With two players unable to continue and only 16 available, Stockport were reduced to 14 men for most of the match. What followed was a remarkable collective effort.

They did just that. Captain Patrick controlled the game intelligently at fly-half, while Harry moved away from his usual stand-off role and interchanged cleverly with Patrick and TK. Their movement kept Fleetwood’s defence guessing and created space across the field. TK, making his first start in the backs, was outstanding in attack and defence, creating several scoring opportunities and causing havoc throughout. Fleetwood’s own coach named him their man of the match.

The forwards set the tone. George H produced a huge, perfectly fair open-field hit in the first half. Pack leader Kitch was a tackling machine, fearlessly taking on opposition players with a considerable size advantage. George N repeatedly gathered kick-offs and drove straight into the heart of Fleetwood territory. Tom P covered the pitch like the workhorse he is; when an opponent squared up, the boxer simply smiled, remembered that his fists are registered weapons and kept them safely by his side. The opposition may not have realised quite how lucky they were.

Angus was everywhere, winning two penalties in the first half and five turnovers across the match. Tom C carried with the “arm of steel” noted by the Fleetwood coach, using it to devastating effect before scoring twice, at 50 and 54 minutes. A conversion at 55 minutes made it 28–0, and Stockport were firmly in command.

Alex then added a try at 60 minutes. Officially a forward’s try from close range, though members of the front-row club may remember it differently: a breathtaking 60-metre solo effort after spending most of the match at prop. Oscar’s conversion made it 35–0.

Musa was immense on the wing, tackling superbly and showing why a self-professed second row can still have the pace, skill and rugby intelligence to shine out wide. Will adapted seamlessly when moved to scrum-half, moving the ball quickly to give the backs room to play and later stripping the ball cleanly from a Fleetwood forward in a crucial late defensive moment.

Fleetwood scored late tries at 63 and 68 minutes, but they could not diminish what had gone before. Despite an extraordinary second-half penalty imbalance, with Fleetwood awarded roughly 17 penalties to Stockport’s two, the Spitfires refused to be rattled.

This was far more than a good result. It was a statement of character from all 16 Spitfires: Harrison, Kitchen, Nelson, Powell, Alwan-Walker, Condron, Chadwick, Coveney-Winter, Hull, Loughlin, Naeem, Nheta, Wightman, McClean, Parker and Hughes. A disciplined, physical, united and thoroughly deserved Stockport Spitfire victory.
